In a significant move for regional hospitality in New South Wales, entrepreneur Glenn Piper has purchased the Bermagui Beach Hotel from Yannis Gantner, a descendant of the Myer retail dynasty. The $20 million deal is expected to be completed by the end of the month.
Initially built in the 1970s, the Bermagui Beach Hotel holds a special place in the local community as a much-loved seaside venue. Piper intends to invest a further $1 million into upgrading the property, aiming to boost its coastal charm while maintaining its strong community appeal. The 18 guest rooms will remain a key focus, with rates likely to rise during high-demand periods.
This acquisition aligns with Piper’s broader vision of restoring and modernising iconic pubs and hotels across the country. His existing portfolio includes Sydney’s Commodore Hotel, the Merewether Beach Hotel in Newcastle, and the historic Q Station at North Head. With the addition of the Bermagui property, Piper’s collective investments in the hospitality sector now total around $200 million, covering both New South Wales and Queensland.
The sale, which was conducted off-market, was facilitated by JLL Hotels broker Kate MacDonald, who noted the rarity of premium beachfront pubs with such strong local significance. Well-known industry voices, including broker Andrew Jolliffe, have lauded Piper’s previous revitalisation efforts and see this latest acquisition as a strong fit within his growing collection.
Piper’s purchase highlights a broader trend: renewed investor confidence and interest in regional hospitality. As rural and coastal communities continue to grow in popularity, strategic investments like this are helping to revitalise beloved venues and breathe new life into Australia’s local tourism and pub scene.
