Aaron Aeberli PhD candidate from University of New England believes sensor systems could be attached to drones or even satellites.

Mr Aeberli said that this form of technology is already being used on various crops such as wheat, sugar cane, cotton and peanuts.

He also believes that this technology has the potential to assess the health of different plants and also the possibility to detect disease occurrence. Diseases could be detected early through the application of thermal imaging.

Mr Aeberli is trialing the technology in Queensland and hoping to develop the technology further for the banana farmers and their industry.

There could be potential for banana growers to one day monitor the health of their own crops by drones.

Mr Aeberli is encouraging farmers and those involved in the agricultural sector to consider this technology once a viable system is developed in the future.
